People define paragraphs in terms of length: a paragraph is a group of at least five sentences, a paragraph is half a page long, etc. In reality, though, the unity and coherence of ideas among sentences is what constitutes a paragraph. Length and appearance do not determine whether a section in a paper is a paragraph. For instance, in some styles of writing, particularly journalistic styles, a paragraph can be just one sentence long. Ultimately, a paragraph is a sentence or group of sentences that support one main idea.
There are many different ways to organize a paragraph:
- Illustration paragraph
- Narration paragraph
- Description paragraph
- Process paragraph
- Definition paragraph
- Comparison and contrast paragraph
- Classification paragraph
- Cause and effect paragraph
- Persuasion paragraph.
The organization you choose will depend on the controlling idea of
the paragraph.
